looks like you were hot on the heels of the retreating swiss army! Interesting rock formations most likely over-looked by many.

Are you saying that this Quartzite
formation used to be sand in a ancient
ocean now just a clue to what was ?

More than likely, these were formed in a river bed, much like you see ripples today in streams. Over time the river dried up and ripples solidified into sandstone, got buried and metamorphosed into quartzite, then were re-exposed probably during the last glacial period.

No matter how hard we try, that Swiss Army always stays one step ahead, hehe. The Swiss Army knife is the classic photo scale for geologic pictures....
