In 1952, ten years before this picture was taken, I sailed the South American on my senior trip from Detroit to Niagra Falls. I graduated from St Louis high in St Louis, Mi.

I was Radio Officer on the SS South American in 1961. I remember the kids diving for coins here and how cold they were, but always yelling throw more money!

My family and I were passengers on the final commercial trip the South American made in the Great Lakes. I think we went to Macinaw Island (sp). As I remember, it was 1966 or 1967 which would have made me 16 or 17. I remember how small our stateroom was - my brother and I shared up/down bunk beds in one stateroom, and our parents were in the stateroom next door. This trip became the first of many cruises for me - my wife and I take at least one a year, now. What a neat old ship this was!
