You probably need to spend more time shooting B&W. I just did some with 35mm in B&W and was pleasantly surprised how the effect minus the color made a photograph.

PS May be reinvesting in digital (Canon 1d n Mark 2) in the future. I am beginning to feel 4 fps at 16mp is just not enough for all around shooting. The 8.5 fps and 8mp with spot exposure is more attractive.
